Test Your Soil First, Then Buy Nutrients

Before purchasing any fertilizer or soil amendment for your lawn or garden, make sure to base your decision on the results of a soil test.

These test results, which you can obtain from most Cooperative Extension offices across the U.S., will provide precise information on the levels of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), lime, sulfur, and other nutrients your soil needs. Overapplication of nitrogen and phosphorus can negatively impact oceans, lakes, rivers, and drinking water. Similarly, other nutrient imbalances can harm or even kill your grass and plants.

The key is to avoid making educated guesses. Incorrect applications can be detrimental to the environment, your landscape, and your budget.
